Dandruff: Brush your shoulders off

What is dandruff?
Dandruff is a condition of the skin which occurs when skin cells renew themselves and the old cells are shed, producing irritating white flakes. There are two types of dandruff, dry dandruff and oily dandruff. People with oily skin tend to suffer from oily dandruff while those with dry skin suffer from dry dandruff. The type of dandruff home remedy that one chooses must therefore be decided according to the type of dandruff. Oily dandruff can be a little tougher to treat as it tends to recur quite easily while dry dandruff can be prevented quite easily.

Causes of Dandruff
Dandruff can be caused by trauma, illness, hormonal disorders, improper diet ( especially the consumption of carbohydrates and sugar ), deficiency of nutrients such as, B- Complex Vitamins, essential fatty acids, and selenium. Dandruff is worst during the winter months so we want to make sure our diet is good, scalp and hair is clean and hydrated. Get rid of your embarrassing problem with natural homemade remedies because it is very noticeable, very itchy and sore if not treat it rapidly. These remedies need to be used for a prolonged period to ensure the successful treatment of your condition. 


Homemade Dandruff Remedies
Sage and Rosemary Leaves
Use 1 oz. each of dried sage and rosemary leaves.
Pour 2 cups of water into a bowl.
Add the sage and rosemary to the water in the bowl.
Leave the leaves in the water for 24 hours.
Place a strainer over a clean bowl. Strain the mixture through a strainer.
Reserve the liquid. Use the reserved liquid to rinse your hair after shampooing.

Herbal conditioner 
1 pint of water.
1 tsp. of burdock root.
1 tsp. of calendula flowers.
1 tsp. of chamomile flowers.
1 tsp. of lavender flowers.
1 tsp. of rosemary leaves.
1 tbs. of vinegar.
6 drops of sage essential oil.
Boil water and pour over herbs. Leave for 20 minutes, strain and add vinegar. Apply after shampooing do not rinse out.

Ginger and sesame oil
Mix 2 tablespoons of ginger juice, 3 tablespoons of sesame oil and a half teaspoon of lemon juice.
Rub the solution on your scalp every other day.
NB: You can also mix some apple cider vinegar to it or use vinegar by itself as it’s a very good remedy for dandruff.

Willow leaves 
Willow leaves amazing healing properties for the scalp.
Boil some willow leaves. Strain the solution, wash your hair and scalp with it.
NB: You may also dampen your scalp with it as many times as you want to increase the effect.

Good Hygiene
Practice good hygiene of your scalp and hair and keep the head accessories clean.


Henna Powder 
Take henna powder, curd and tea water.
Add few drops of lemon juice to it. Make a paste and apply it on your scalp and hair.
Leave it for at least half an hour then wash off. Apply this paste to your hair at least once in 15 days to cure dandruff.

Coconut oil
Unrefined coconut oil is one of the best remedy for dandruff. Rub it on your scalp every day and your problem should disappear in no time. You can buy unrefined coconut oil in any health food store.

Nettle Tea
Drink nettle tea once a day. It is not only good for dandruff but for your hair in general. To increase the effect of the treatment, apply the tea to your scalp.
NB:You can also put some of the nettle extract into your shampoo.

You may use a combination of 2 or more of these remedies to get your desired result.  If your body reacts to any of the remedies in a negative way, please discontinue use immediately and visit a doctor.

    Measure 5 tbsp. of dried thyme leaves using the measuring spoons. Add the thyme to 2 cups of water in a cook pot. Boil for 15 minutes. Place a strainer over a glass bowl. Pour the thyme and water mixture into the strainer. Retain the fluid. Discard the thyme leaves. Use the reserved liquid as a hair rinse each time you shampoo.

    Measure 1/4 cup of dried neem leaves to 3 cups of water in a cook pot. Bring to a boil. Allow to cool. Strain the mixture into a clean bowl and reserve the liquid. Use the liquid to rinse your hair two or three times per week.

    Peel a lime using a sharp knife. Pour 1 cup of coconut oil into a bowl. Place the lime peel in the bowl of coconut oil. Squeeze the juice from the lime and reserve the juice.



    Allow the coconut oil and lime peel to marinate in a sunny window for 10 days. Remove the lime peel from the coconut oil. Massage 1 tbsp. of coconut oil-lime peel mixture into your scalp. Allow the mixture to absorb into your scalp for five minutes. Shampoo with an herbal shampoo. Rinse your hair with the reserved lime juice. Rinse with water. Repeat two to three times per week.

    Rinse your hair with pure, organic cider vinegar after washing your hair with an herbal shampoo. Rinse clear with water to remove the smell of vinegar. Use the vinegar rinse each time you shampoo.
